9 Summer Lake Songs

9 Summer Lake Songs

In the past few years, I’ve heard a couple of songs that when I listen to the lyrics, my brain instantly thinks “lake time”. Several of the songs are country. I guess the lyrics resonate with me. I posed the question with my facebook page (what songs make you think about the lake?) and my friends reminded me of several more I forgot! Some old songs from the 1970s but they still sound good today. What’s your favorite lake song or video? Share in the comments below so I can add to my collection!

Alan Jackson – Drive

1958 Red and White Larson

This song starts off describing the first boat his dad bought – a wooden boat with a ’75 Johnson outboard motor. It was even red with a white stripe down the middle. When those words start off at the beginning of the song, I remember my first boat that I was allowed to drive – a red and white Larson. Granted it was fiberglass, not plywood, but the mental image he describes takes me back to my childhood. This picture shows my dad and I in the boat around 1974 or 1975 and look who’s driving!

Christopher Cross – Sailing

Someone shared this song today and I was instantly taken back to my early years! This was my favorite song in our big house at Lake of the Ozarks. This song would come on the radio and I wanted to grab our 1 person sailboat and head out to the lake! To hear it now just takes me back to a carefree age. This was a time when my parents made all the decisions in my life, I didn’t have to work for a living and I had all summer to spend on the lake! The good ole days.

Little Big Town – Pontoon

A more recent song that comes to mind is “Pontoon” by “Little Big Town”. This is a country song that has a lazy, pretty melody that rocks. Today is the first time I’ve ever watched the video, but I can tell you, even if you’re not into country music, if you watch this video you will be wishing that it wasn’t spring time, but summer time!

Craig Morgan – Redneck Yacht Club

When this song first came out in 2009, I was enjoying life with my ski club as much as I possibly could. The president of our ski club that year was “Bob” just like the president in the song! The video has some great lake fun shots too!

Brad Paisley – Water

Another song I almost forgot about. This is a song from 2010 and once again, a country artist is able to paint a pretty good picture of our love affair with water. This video is like watching America’s Funniest Home Videos set to a Brad Paisley song. Great clips!

Jake Owen – Beachin

This next song was my FAVORITE country song of 2014. Granted, it’s not about the lake, but a beach. Doesn’t matter really, for the song talks about having fun in the sun! For me, this song meant it was a time to have fun in my boat! I loved to put this song on my iPhone and crank up the stereo as I drove the boat down to the ski club each weekend. My brother had just installed my birthday present last summer – a new stereo in my Mastercraft Prostar – and every chance I got, the music came on and I start with this song!

Kid Rock – All Summer Long

This song has been out a few years, but every time I hear those words “splashing through the sand bars” and “catching walleye from the docks” I instantly picture warm summer days and nights too. The video shows Kid Rock driving an old wooden boat too! Pretty cool!

Jake Owen – Barefoot Blue Jean Night

Jake Owen must be a lake loving person like myself. He has a way with his songs that make me think, SUMMER! The song doesn’t say “Lake” but rather “down by the riverside”. However, watch the video and tell me this doesn’t look like lake life!

 Kenny Chesney – Summertime

Even though Kenny doesn’t reference a lake in this classic tune, the sentiments remind me of everything summer, nonetheless. He sings about ball games, boys watching the girls shimmy off their cut offs, a watering hole that’s nice and cold , bare feet on a dashboard and overall fun in the summer. Definitely deserves to be a lake song.

About Shey Harms

Shey has enjoyed the lake life since she was very young. Her parents always had a place at the lake for as long as she can remember. Now, she belongs to a waterski club in Kansas and drives their family boat in the ski shows teaching her family some of the traditions she learned as a child.

When I hear any Norah Jones song, I’m instantly back on Lake Eshquagama in northern Minnesota on my parents pontoon boat. After dinner, we’d get our “roadies” together and head down to the dock. Dad would fire up the boat and off we’d go – at a very leisurely pace all around the lake, waving at everyone as we floated past their place. Norah Jones was usually on the stereo and was the perfect mellow accompaniment to a perfect mellow boat ride. Ahhhhhhh, the lake.

My favorite memories with my family are the night boat rides we took. Sometimes my dad would drive fast and sometimes he would putt along. It’s a tradition my brother and I still continue every summer. This year I was playing all my Coldplay songs while we took a long boat ride one night. Started off with “A Sky Full of Stars”. Very appropriate for a night boat ride.
